Key Takeaways
Boots are essential footwear every winter, and many of this season's top trends—from slouchy silhouettes to sturdy platforms—prioritize comfort without sacrificing style.
If you're shopping for boots that balance wearability with trends, consider details like the heel height, toe box, and material to find a style that carries you through the day.
Chilly, slushy weather has arrived, and it's time to pull out our heavy hitters: cozy, warm coats, heavy-duty denim, and a pair of boots (or a few, let's be honest) that can take you through all sorts of winter scenarios. There's much to consider when selecting the right boots for your lifestyle and the weather. Because boot silhouettes offer so much diversity in style, color, heel height, and even fabric (think: suede, leather, and knit materials), cold weather just might be the peak time to get playful with your style.
For winter 2025, the most popular trends include ongoing favorites like moto boots, over-the-knee styles, and animal prints—plus sleek, low-heeled sock boots have entered the fashion files and show no signs of slowing. And in good news for the comfort and health of your feet, podiatrists say there are comfortable takes on all of the above worth considering. Keep reading for seven winter boot trends that keep your feet comfortable without sacrificing style, complete with expert insights.

How to Choose Comfortable Boots
Choosing winter boots that merge comfort and style takes some thought, but with a bit of guidance, anything is possible. Below are several elements to consider when shopping:
Heel height: "I typically prefer heels in the one- to two-inch range, as this preserves the fashion element without placing excessive strain on the anatomical structures of the foot and ankle," explains board-certified foot surgeon Maya Trueman, DPM. A completely flat shoe might feel like the most ideal option for comfort, but she says that a small heel can give some slack to the Achilles tendon and may reduce calf tightness and strain.
Sizing: "When it comes to boot size, I recommend patients choose half to one size up and opt for wider widths when possible," says board-certified foot surgeon Jennifer Chow, DPM. The boot should feel comfortable enough that you can wiggle your toes, but stable enough that your ankle is not lifting from the heel.
Toe box: "I strongly prefer a wide toe box," Trueman says. "A pointed toe box compresses the toes into an abnormal and deviated position. In many patients, this can exacerbate underlying conditions like bunions or trigger the initial formation of deformities like hammertoes and corns."
Material: "For materials, choosing something that can contour to your feet over time can allow the shoe to accommodate existing deformities," Trueman explains. The best materials that will naturally contour to your feet over time are suede and leather. Additionally, she says these fabrics minimize the risk of friction and rubbing between the shoe and the foot, which also minimizes the risk of blister formation and callus buildup.
Byrdie Tip
To break in your new boots, Chow recommends wearing them for two hours the first day, four hours the second day, and six hours the third day. Gradually increase the hours spent in the shoes until you can comfortably wear them all day.
The Most Comfortable Winter Boot Trends
Platform Boots

Despite platforms' statement nature, experts say many versions of this trending style can be surprisingly comfortable. "Look for platform boots that offer a cushioned insole made of memory foam or gel, or boots that have room to accommodate an orthotic that adds arch support," Trueman says.
Because platforms can get heavy depending on their height and design, Trueman recommends something of moderate weight. "Heavy platform boots can alter how you walk and demand that the muscles in your legs work harder to lift your feet with every step," she explains. However, she notes that the right balance is essential: A boot that's too lightweight offers no structural support or stability, which in turn puts more strain on your ankles and feet.

Over-the-Knee

Sky-high, over-the-knee boots are everywhere and look stunning, but it's essential to choose your style carefully: Trueman says stilettos can place ankles at a much greater risk of sprain or even fracture. Her recommendation: a wider block heel, as this will evenly distribute body weight over a greater surface area to prioritize stability and minimize injury risk.
If you can't give up that stiletto boot, Chow says you can wear them for special occasions or in limited time increments. However, she warns: "Just know you are on borrowed time before your metatarsals or the ball of your foot start singing," she warns. "The increase in heel height in any shoe will increase the pressure on the remainder of your foot that makes contact with the ground." To help with this, she recommends a gel metatarsal pad for added comfort.
